Philosophy

The Boardroom Consulting Group inspires board members to be more; to make a difference; to leave a lasting legacy.

We believe that being a board member is not only about what you do, but why you do it. We believe the way you act influences the way you are perceived and that perception is fundamental to corporate reputation.

We believe that effective corporate governance can only arise from:

  • understanding boards as a social system;
  • acknowledging board members as autonomous individuals;
  • refining board cultures to encourage alternative views and to engage in robust debate; and
  • educating board members to communicate clearly individually and collectively.

At the Boardroom Consulting Group we believe that these foundations must come from within the board and cannot be simply built around it. To this end, we work with the Board and its members to enhance the existing group structures, to challenge long-held assumptions, to expose board members to different perspectives, and to nurture a culture which seeks out debate and embraces confrontational ideas.

We deliver this through a suite of communications products and services:

  • Facilitation of board and/or executive strategy sessions
  • Confidential one-on-one mentoring and coaching
  • Crisis management preparedness workshops
  • Media skills training
  • Speech writing
  • Corporate governance research and position papers
  • Board-specific workshops on group dynamics, corporate communications/managerial jargon, debate and decision-making.

Being a director is about leadership and this means taking responsibility for decisions which affect the lives and livelihoods of so many people. If you don't understand how you act and how you communicate as a director you are betraying the trust of those who have charged you with managing their savings, their jobs and their welfare. Only a board comprised of members who know what they want to achieve, and can communicate this to one another - as well as to their sphere of influence - has the right to make such decisions.
Governance isn't about 'ticking boxes'. It's about understanding how we contribute as individuals in order to ensure the decisions the board makes are the right ones. Governance is not about you and the job you did before you joined the board - it's about you as a director and what you're going to do with it now.

- Ann-Maree Moodie, Managing Director, The Boardroom Consulting Group Pty Ltd
